Influence of the industrial background on the way of life in different European regions.

This project will raise the students`awareness to the fact that they live in a region forged by its industrial context. The latter still influences their way of life and culture.During the entire project, the students do research on their own industrial, economic and social context as well as that of their international partners. The visits will enable them to acquire further knowledge on the similarities and differences between the regions and to define their distinctive features.During the project, emphasis will be placed on*Poland: - Salt Mine of Wieliczka - City of Nova Hutta and its steelworksCurrent state of the industry: declining, reconversion in progress, tourism*Norway: - City of Odda - Corbide, zinc, aluminium industry with hydro- electric powerCurrent state of the industry: declining, reconversion (UNESCO)*Turkey: - City of Canakkale - Ceramic industry - Iron, sement, furniture industryCurrent state of the industry: expansion (because the primary sector is still the most important one)*Luxembourg: - Heavy industry shut down (mines and furnaces) - Reconversion successful into a service sector - Industrial sites reconverted into natural reserves, living areas, culture and commerce - Contrasting situation in the regions bordering on Luxembourg: These regions have not managed to base the survival of their ecomony on other activitiesThe students will thus become aware of the similar `problems`which are dealt with in a different way by the regions.
