Increase of the education quality of natural sciences in the Western part of Latvia and Lithuania (Natural sciences)
Start date: Jun 13, 2010, End date: Dec 12, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

Natural science and mathematics curriculum in Latvia and Lithuania should have been changed a long time ago. Rapid development of science, technology and economic changes has resulted in many labour-intensive industries turning into knowledge-based industries. Quality of higher and vocational education is a precondition for preparing natural science, engineering and technology experts. Lack of professionalism and incompetence of teachers discourages young people from choosing engineering and exact sciences. Competitiveness and development of highly qualified labour in the project region may be promoted through better natural science education. That is the way to prepare youngsters for studying engineering and other branches of natural sciences. Teachers involved in the project have an objective to create new integrated natural sciences education programme Preservation of the environment – protection of our future. Other objective is to create teachers manual as a methodological support in implementation of the above natural sciences education programme. All schools taking part in the project had natural science cabinets renovated or upgraded. Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Information and Natural sciences classrooms have been equipped with modern facilities and advanced learning materials. The total of 30 cabinets has been renovated and 36 cabinets have received new facilities.
