The main focus of Eötvös József Foundation School is providing post-secondary advanced level vocational education and training in the field of tourism. Due to the characteristics of the training the school considers work experience abroad a strategic factor. Work placements abroad largely contribute to the fulfilment of the school’s mission which is among others providing opportunities and high quality, practice oriented vocational education and training.
English 2000 School of English in Bournemouth has been the partner institution of the school in eight Leonardo projects so far. The language school conducts the one-week language and work preparation course of the participants, provides the workplaces where the students complete their professional training, monitors and helps the students. The services of English 2000 have been assessed as excellent both by Eötvös József Foundation School and the students who participated in the eight projects.
The beneficiaries of the application submitted by Eötvös József Foundation School are the students who study Tourism at this school. We would like to send 30 students to the United Kingdom within the framework of this project. There is high demand among the students of the school for the professional practice abroad. They are motivated by learning more about tourism, language learning, as well as gaining work experience abroad. Most of our students have a humble financial background; consequently, they can neither pay for the travelling arrangements to England, nor for the living expenses while abroad. According to our survey, approximately 30-50% of the students come from a poor financial background. The professional practice in England can only be carried out with the assistance and support of the Erasmus+ Program. The main purpose of the project is to broaden the students’ professional knowledge, to fulfil the professional practice required by the syllabus, to develop language and professional skills and to increase the mobility of those working in the tourism industry. Other objectives are: getting to know other cultures, getting references for the future, and last but not least, cultivating the relationship between the partner institutions.
A short and concise summary of the content and realization of the project:
1. Announcing and presenting the professional practice abroad to the students.
2. Recruiting the students.
3. Preparing the recruited students, providing additional training and help. The students attend language, professional and cultural courses at the school.
4. Organising the placement at different hotels with the help of the partner institution (appointing the hotels where the professional practice will take place, making all the travel and accommodation arrangements, taking out insurance, assigning the accompanying teacher).
5. A one-week language and work preparation course in England at English 2000.
6. A 12-week work experience monitored, mentored and tutored by English 2000 at the hotels in or near Bournemouth chosen by them.
7. Keeping contact with the partner, the appointed hotels and the students during the whole work placement period.
8. Assessing, discussing and disseminating the results of the project.
9. Closing the project, writing a report to summarise it.
The professional practice is 13 weeks long. The institution submits an application for the expenses of three groups.
1st group: 2 August 2014 – 1 November 2014 (10 students)
2nd group: 21 March 2015 – 20 June 2015 (10 students)
3rd group: 4 April 2015 – 4 July 2015 (10 students)
The first week includes a language and work preparation course at English 2000 School of English in Bournemouth.
1st group: 4 August 2014 – 8 August 2014
2nd group: 23 March 2015 – 27 March 2015
3rd group: 6 April 2015 – 10 April 2015
The benefits of the project for our students are the following: the development of professional and language skills, the improvement of general social skills, an aspiration for independent, accurate work is formed, students get a reference, they get an insight into European culture, and their way of thinking and approach to work changes considerably. By successfully completing the professional practice the students complete the requirements of the syllabus and obtain the Europass certificate as well.
Eötvös József Foundation School can make use of the experiences of the project in its teaching and educational work, especially in vocational and language teaching. The short term benefits of the project for the beneficiaries are the above mentioned ones. The long term benefits can be observed in the improvement of the standard of the Hungarian hotel and catering industry. The long term benefits for our institution are the growing reputation of the school as well as the growth of our social capital.
