Horticulture in Towns for Inclusion and Socialisation
Start date: Jan 1, 2013,

Nowadays most people in the world – for the first time in history – live in urban areas rather than in the countryside. Urban gardens reconcile man with nature. They play important social and didactic functions and often represent an opportunity for learning and socialisation, but also for self-food production: especially for people who are experiencing loneliness, precarious income and underfeeding, like unemployed and low skilled adults. The project HORTIS - Horticulture in Towns for Inclusion and Socialisation - wants to promote socialisation and lifelong learning among unemployed and low skilled persons through community and urban gardening. Two are the main objectives: - to train a new generation of community gardeners able to promote new community gardens at local level, by attracting and teaching other people to run an urban garden;- To engage unemployed adults, in particular those with low-skills, in training courses on how to create and maintain a garden. In concrete, HORTIS will develop:- A specific teaching methodology and a set of educational materials in different formats (video tutorials, e-book, plastic cards, etc.) illustrating different aspects of the social and community gardening;- An interactive and multilingual web portal to foster communication and networking among civil society associations, trainers, local government officials in social work and urban planning, etc.;- Training courses for trainers in the partner countries: Italy, Germany, Spain and Hungary- Pilot courses for adults on urban gardening - A Toolkit in English and in the project languages (DE, ES, HU, IT) including a promotional video, short guidelines on how to create a little community garden and a kit of seeds ready to be sown. The consortium brings together 9 organisations from four European countries (DE, ES, HU, IT) with complementary experiences and backgrounds, working together with the common aim of promoting lifelong learning through social horticulture.
