Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The University of Gothenburg has participated in the Erasmus programme since 1992. Being a substantial part of our mobility, our aim is to increase the cooperation and the quality within Erasmus+ KA1. We are involved in all mobility schemes and previously had a great number of agreements, not necessarily involving mobility on a regular basis. Before the transfer from LLP to Erasmus+ an extensive evaluation work took place and when the new framework programme started, the university had considerably fewer agreements but with a higher utilisation rate. EXCHANGE STUDENTS (SMS) The number of outbound SMS was 318 for the academic year 2014/2015 and 254 for the academic year 2015/2016 - a significant decline. Among identified obstacles are students’ fear of facing problems with course substitution and recognition matters. Students today are also eager to finish their studies to enter the labour market. We aim at increasing the number of outbound students through intensified communication activities and by promoting good practises. ERASMUS PLACEMENTS (SMP) We experience a growing interest for the SMP. Some programmes have the possibility to include placement in the curricula. We also have introduced a placement semester at two faculties, which can be included in the degree. The number of outbound students on SMP was 84 during the academic year 2014/2015. Compared with previous year, (40) the number of outbound trainee students has more than doubled. STAFF TRAINING (STT) The interest for STT has increased, exceeding the granted number in the project. The possibility to engage in Erasmus staff training is advertised through various channels at the university. We actively try to interest staff at departments in order to develop a closer link to strategic partner institutions in order to exchange students and staff. The number of granted mobilities was 19 (24 sent), to be compared with previous period with 14 outbound administrative staff. TEACHER TRAINING (STA) The number out outbound teachers was for the contract period 14/16 been lower than estimated. The reason for this is that we choose to use the 15/17 contract for teaching staff as of June 2015. For this contract period we sent 58 teachers (84 granted). We know some academics consider the programme to be too bureaucratic to apply for funding even when being eligible. POSTGRADUATE MOBILITY Since PhD students are categorised as both student and employee, they can take part in any of the schemes. So far it has been hard to reach this group but once we have identified the right channels, we believe it is possible to increase the number of outbound PhD students, which is our ambition. ACTIVITIES Mobility activities are mainly taking place at the departments and faculties. The two largest faculties sign their own agreements and run their own International Offices. The International Centre (IC) at central level has an on-going, overall responsibility for the Erasmus programme; applying, reporting and distribution of the grants. Exchanges for staff (STA and STT) and for placements (SMP) are entirely administrated at the IC. IC regularly provides information and offer support to the departmental coordinators. The group of coordinators is a useful source of information and we gather the group twice a year for workshop-based seminars with topics selected from input and evaluations from the participants. It is of great value for the coordinators to meet and discuss administration and processes associated with internationalisation. We meet the new coordinators individually to give them a good start and have recently introduced seminars for beginners, which aroused a greater interest than predicted. We distribute up-dated information and news about the programme activities, especially before times of nomination, selection, distribution of grants and reporting. A special Erasmus+ taskforce has been set up for swift and efficient handling of urgent issues. RESULTS AND IMPACT The University of Gothenburg is characterised by a strong societal responsibility and a global engagement, striving to educate democratic citizens with respect for basic values. We strive to initiate cooperation characterised by complete academic environments, where research and education benefit from each other. Our long-term goal is that internationalisation shall be naturally integrated in research, education and collaboration with the surrounding society to ensure high quality. In our search for suitable strategic partners we evaluate the possibilities to engage in mobility projects such as Strategic Partnerships, Knowledge Alliances, Master-programmes and Capacity building projects. We think it is crucial to offer international prospects within our student´s curricula - we prepare them for future challenges by actively promoting the possibilities for placements and through the Erasmus+-programme we can fulfil our university’s goal to educate for the European labour market.
