Higher education student and staff mobility project

Regent?s University London (RUL) is rightly proud of its internationalization. We are a community of over 140 different nationalities. We teach nine foreign languages, as well as providing English language tuition and support. We have an extensive network of prestigious international partners and work with other universities beyond our Partnership Network around the world. Internationalization is one of Regent?s nine central values, and our internationalist approach is one of the most distinctive aspects of our University?s proposition. Participating in the Erasmus+ programme provides an excellent opportunity for our students and staff to acquire international experience, improve language skills, and practice and develop intercultural knowledge in the target countries. Embedded in all of our degree programmes are opportunities for students to undertake a compulsory or optional Study Period Abroad. We planned to send 159 students (150 for study and 9 for training purposes) and 20 staff members (12 teaching and 8 training visits) abroad within the Erasmus+ framework in the 2014/15 academic year. At the end of the project 156 students completed their study or training period abroad in 11 countries, showing a 20% increase compared to last year?s data. 18 staff members gained further international experience in 8 countries. Therefore in total, Regent?s University London facilitated 174 participants to benefit from the Erasmus+ programme in 2014/15. The students undertook an average of 4 month-long study or training period and our staff colleagues carried out an average of 4 day-long training/teaching visits. Students confirmed that they gained analytical skills, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills during their Erasmus+ mobility. They learned to become more independent and have a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, which in turn boosted their own confidence in their abilities. Besides gaining invaluable field-specific knowledge, they also improved their skills in planning and organizing their lives and becoming more resilient. The international experience encouraged them to become open to new challenges and understand the value of different cultures. According to the International Strategy of the University, we are aiming to involve 40% of the student cohort to undertake compulsory study or training periods abroad by 2020. The staff mobility not only reinforced the cooperation with the partner institutions, but also provided an excellent opportunity to extend the professional network of the participants, share expertise, sector-specific or practical skills and developing joint projects. We are proud that we increased the number of participants in the Erasmus+ staff mobility by 38% from last year and keep promoting this opportunity working along the Development Plan?s goal of having 5% of staff permanently on faculty exchanges abroad. The annual International Partners? Conference organised by the International Partnerships Office (IPO) provides an excellent platform to exchange most up-to-date trends on UK and European Higher Education and to develop further academic or professional collaboration.
