Higher education student and staff mobility project

Jönköping University, JU, organized in 1994 as a private foundation under the leadership of a board of governors, is made up of four schools: Jönköping International Business School, School of Engineering, School of Education and Communication, and School of Health and Welfare. Having an international profile and cooperating with international institutions provides our university greater opportunities to improve the quality of our education and research. The international profile of the university is being achieved by increasing the number of international students in our programs, encouraging our students to study at universities around the world, stimulating two-way faculty exchange, publishing in international journals, and involving our researchers in international conferences and international research projects. The project has enhanced the international profile of JU through adding more cultural diversity in the student, teacher and other staff population. The financial support offered by the Erasmus+ program will help to achieve a two-way cooperation in staff and student exchange and help the university to deepen its international profile in order to achieve one of Jönköping University's goals where internationalization is integrated in all kind of activities at the University. Part of this work is to make sure to create the right processes and conditions for the teachers and administrative staff at Jönköping University to have the possibility to participate in different international programmes, for example the Erasmus+. Staff mobility is an essential prerequisite for being able to work fully with the internationalization of higher education which contributes to commitment and knowledge and engagement in issues related to international relations, which in the long term profit the students on all levels, undergraduate and graduate level, as the education will be benefited from a more international and intercultural profile. To support and increase staff mobility for example within the Erasmus+ programme it is of great importance for the Board at JU to support the staff with motivating and interesting incentives. This can for example be done by increasing financial or time resources. The way to achieve this goal may differ between the different Schools. JU has a high percentage of students and staff that participate in Erasmus+ and have a focus on both staff and student mobility The number of mobility’s 158 students and 54 staff is as expected and are a result of Jönköping University's Internationalization strategy and policy. The coming budget period Jönköping University will focus more on Student mobility for training and continue building up an administrative organization dealing with this particular mobility. In the student survey more than 90% of the students have answered that they are more able to adapt to new situations and that they are more open-minded and curious about new challenges which gives an impact, not only for the individual student, but also on the whole society, locally, nationally, and internationally. The mobility has also had a great impact on the students international mind-set and more than 60% now feel more European. This change in mindset will have an impact on how to deal with the challenges that Sweden and Europe are facing. The project provides the different schools at JU the ability to develop a deeper relationship with the universities in other European countries. Mutual knowledge transfer between our universities will help to improve the quality of the different study areas of the different projects. One of JU’s strategies is to increase student attraction and satisfaction and increased internationalization through strong exchange programs is an important part of the strategy. Some indicators regarding the level of internationalization are; international program students; incoming exchange students; share of courses in English and international collaboration. All those indicators can be developed within the Erasmus program. The strategy also involves establishing strategic partners for closer cooperation and exchange, such as dual and double degrees. Exchange has been the core of internationalization at JU and this should be maintained or increased by sustainable relations with our partners.
