Before the merging
The Ensemble St Félix La Salle was created from the merging of two high schools, St Jean Baptiste de La Salle (SJBS) and St Félix (SF) and two secondary schools, St Donatien and Bon Conseil. As a “Lycée des Métiers” (June 2015), the Ensemble offers a wide range of courses (academic, technological and vocational) in: IT, industrial maintenance, energy, process chemistry, communication, international trade, business.
The two high schools are already subsided by the Erasmus Programme, in addition to the participation to the RENASUP Consortium. St Félix has sent between 30 and 35 students of BTS (2-year degree in Higher Education) in International Trade abroad, including from 10 to 14 students under the Erasmus program.
The high school has a mobility training, one or two teaching mobilities as well, and receives mobility training and education from the Thomas MORE University (Kempen, Belgium).
Finally, SJBS has sent from 1 to 4 students of BTS Electrotechnology abroad since 2009 to perform their work placements in Spain or in the United Kingdom.
After the merging
In January 2014, we met problems related to the different statuses of the two high schools regarding European Institutions. Since the merging we have gathered the skills and resources of the industry and office sectors - two different cultures - to improve learning and transversal teaching, especially in languages and language projects in which the students from both cultures are mixed.
Goals/results
We have written the project of the schools again. It will be voted by the community in June. The project focuses on five directions, among which the acceptance of all students and the opening to foreign cultures and cooperation with foreign countries. We work with middle and working class students who do not have necessarily a foreign culture and we wish to offer them an opportunity to grow up through European projects within the Erasmus + Charter.
Several projects are already in progress in the high school: exchanges such as Oxford Barcelona, London, in December 2015, New York in spring 2016; in Argentina and Sicily. The latter take place within 2 weeks in France and abroad.
Several technical courses are taught in English such as ETLV (English as a technical language). Morover, teachers attend trainings to enhance their skills in foreign languages (DNL). We also want to develop “mobilité-stage” programs in vocational courses (B-tech in Electricity, Maintenance, Trading, and Administration).
We are working hard with our teachers to develop the quality and the number of mobilities, especially in the industrial environment where students do not have this culture yet. Despite the difficulties in finding industrial or service companies, we regularly maintain a mobility that we probably will increase with our commitment to open the secondary school and the vocational school to European and international countries. Moreover, we give the companies a place that will improve the quality and relevance of teaching, mobility, students’ employability and above all students’ studies.
In 2015, DEES (L3) students and 35 BTS students completed their work placements abroad: among them 7 received a work placement mobility grant in the business sector, and in the Energy sector in the United Kingdom within ACCOR Group. Assessments are generally good.
This experience is an opportunity for our students to develop their personal skills and enhance their comprehension of European culture and values. It allows as well to compare the industrial processes in France and abroad. For students in international trade, company training is a great asset to increase their level of qualification and employability in the field of importation-exportation and business development. The majority of students continue their studies in License (L3) abroad or in France, which was not the case 5 or 6 years ago.
However we regret that some companies did not respect the specifications and requirements as well as educational commitments. Some students, in trading, performed task in basic trading and administration whereas they were expected to work on prospecting clients. Despite the difficulties and obstacles of the merging and the creation of the new structure, and despite the occurrence of new platforms (Penelope + Mobility-Tools, ECHECA ...), more complex, we managed to meet the needs of all students who wanted to live a foreign experience.
Today, our structure is stable and is among the biggest in Nantes (over 2,500 students including 500 Higher Education students). Our objectives connected to training, education and work placements have never been more ambitious. With human resources (Stéphane PLONEIS is the International Affairs Officer), the new organization of services and good control of mobility management tools, we will achieve our goals.
