Hermitage Park Staff Language Development
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Scottish Government’s 1 + 2 language policy aims to ensure that all pupils in Scotland receive quality language learning throughout their education. This is something our school is working towards implementing fully. Our projects aims to do this through the following means;• To improve participants skills and competence within their chosen language.• To develop participants cultural awareness and understanding of life in another country.• To develop links with a partner school within Europe using ICT and other resources.• To provide participants with a range of materials and ideas for teaching French or Spanish throughout the school including ICT resources. There are eight members of staff applying for the project in total – one for Spanish and seven for French. The member of staff applying for Spanish teaches at early and second Curriculum for Excellence levels. The seven members of staff applying for French are from early, first and second Curriculum for Excellence levels. The language experience of staff applying is varying, from novice to staff holding a Higher in their language, and all wish to develop their language skills and confidence. A mixture of early level, first level and second level staff have applied to ensure that knowledge can be passed on throughout the stages of the school. The eight members of staff who have applied will participate in an immersion course, run by LFEE and GTCS accredited, in either Spain or France. This will allow them to develop their competence in the targeted language, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing and develop their understanding of the culture of the country. These skills will enable teachers and classes to develop links with a partner school within Europe firmly embedding global citizenship within our school’s curriculum. The long term benefits of this course are for all the participants of the course to feel secure and supported in the teaching of their targeted language. These teachers would be able to share their knowledge and experience with colleagues across the school to ensure that all current and future staff feel supported in teaching Spanish or French. This will develop a consistent and progressive approach to language teaching and embed a thorough understanding of the European community throughout the school and wider community.
