Health literacy is the one’s capability of reading, comprehending and using the health information in order to provide effective and appropriate decisions related to the health. It is about how to use health system and how to benefit from it. It is necessary for each individual to have the enough health information in order to make a decision about health.
According to the surveys conducted in the USA, 14 % of the public is in the range of low level, 22 % has the core knowledge, only 12 % has the high level. In our country, there are few studies regarding the health literacy. According to the 2011 UNP report, the level of health literacy in our country might be 4th grade level. The studies show that those who have the low level of health literacy use emergency services more, are more often admitted to the hospital and have high level of death rate in serious illnesses. Negative health problems such as the increase in health spending might be envisaged.
Health literacy studies which started in 1950s in the world have gained currency with “Health Transformation Project” in 2003 and restructuring of Ministry of Health in 2012. Our institution’s biggest need is about how to step to the studies regarding health literacy. Our Project corresponds to the goals of the Ministry of Health 2013-2017 Strategic Plan which our institution has adopted as the representative of the ministry in the region. The most important needs about the health literacy for our participants are related to what they are and how to realize them.
Our institution and accordingly our region will have necessary information with the help of our project. We are aiming to improve our knowledge and competences by visiting our partners, health institutions and other institutions such as municipalities, NGOs and educational institutions which raise awareness on health issues in Belgium and Germany by studying and observing health literacy issues in Europe. We are also intending to guide the Ministry of Health and as well as other health directories in our country.
Health literacy is a subject which all of the societies must work on. It is necessary for us to improve health literacy level of the society and the individuals in the shortest time. Raising awareness among health professional educators, improving their knowledge and skills and developing health literacy level of society must be among the first goals in order to realize aforesaid goals. Health professionals must lead in this important issue. 20 health professional educators and health literacy learners will take place in this project. Health professionals who take the biggest role to improve people’s health literacy level and who must improve their own knowledge and skills the will study and observe the health literacy issue by visiting the health institutions and other institutions operating in this field (municipalities, NGOs, and other educational institutions) in the EU. Our project will contribute to promoting informal and nonformal learning, access to life long learning services and increasing the number of adults with enough knowledge and skills by promoting adult education and with the help of new learning opportunities.
Our 20 participants will sudy on health literacy services operations in 2 EU member states, Belgium and Germany, observe and discuss in the institutions within these countries for 2 weeks, improve their personal knowledge, experience and language competences with the help of cultural activities. It’s no doubt that a health professional who become more qualified in terms of both professional level, and social and cultural level will help to increase Health Services standards both in Bolu and in Turkey in general. Our project will contribute to improvement in health service quality and development of health in Bolu by increasing professional competences of workers in health literacy. The issue of health literacy which must be emphasized by all of the societies in the world, will raise awareness on local, regional, national, European and international level due to being on agenda as a European Union project.
Mobilities will be realized with the groups of 10 people for 14 days in Germany and Belgium.
