Post-traumatic stress disorder, earthquake which gets out of normal people experiences, natural disasters like flood and wars, exposing to sexual or physical assault, exposing to torture, abduction experience, traffic accidents, exposing to acts of terrorism are coercive psychic phenomena and generally people cannot stem the tide of these by themselves. For these reasons, these cases include emotional, mental, behavioral and social dysregulations and leave a short or long term psychological impressions on people and society. The number of people who go through a trauma is unknown but it is stated that Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)’s spreading rate varies between 1% and 14%. The frequency of disorder can change according to the problem encountered and the level of exposure. For example, 14 months later from the Marmara earthquake, Livanou determined at the rate of 63% PTSD case. In general symptoms start first three months after the case but sometimes they can emerge after months or years. While, one half of cases get better in first three months, in serious cases without early response symptoms can become chronic. Untreated and chronic PTSD can be masked with drug addiction, substance abuse, eating disorder, phobias, criminal conducts, depression, fainting spells, obsessive compulsive disorder and psychotic breaks. Unless PTSD is diagnosed early and someone struggles with PTSD, it can become chronic and high cost health problem for individuals and society. In our region, violence encountered, life-disrupting mass migration and increase in the number of fragmented family within this period are seen as post-traumatic syndrome.
During disasters which can lead to PTSD and influence a large part of society, nurses are important members of crisis team. Regardless of the effects of cases, it is expected that nurses deal with the problems and help people. Also it is expected that nurses have knowledge about distress of injured individuals, recognition of psychiatric symptoms and helping. Nurses take a significant role in recognition of individuals and groups who are under risk in terms of PTSD. Also, besides out of ordinary cases, due to the work environment and nature of the way of work, nurses are involved in groups responsive to PTSD. They can encounter traumatized people in work environment and also they can be exposed to traumatic events. For this reason, it is important that they have knowledge about what can be happened, what can be psychological reactions and what can they do individualistically before and during the traumatic event.
