Heideruh International
Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Feb 28, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

We offer two volunteers from Russia to volunteer in the Antifascist recreation and meeting centre “Heideruh”. The service is part of the European Voluntary Service of the Erasmus + programme and lasts twelve months. The volunteers can learn about the work of a charitable organization and learn a variety of skills and development opportunities. The Antifascist recreation and meeting centre “Heideruh” was established in 1945 by politically persecuted by the Nazi-regime and is until today a recreation centre for the victims of fascism and their families. Meanwhile, we are also a conference and education center. Political groups, parties and initiatives organize here their retreats and offer trainings in political education. But Heideruh established itself increasingly as a place of political education with a focus on anti-fascism and commemorative culture. That’s why we offer more and more educational events by ourselves. For several years, there are youth and asylum projects, antiracist initiatives have been founded here. Heideruh is a dynamic place of learning and political exchange. Commemorative cultural and educational history are the focalpoints of our activities.Heideruh is located near the city “Buchholz in der Nordheide” in the northern part of the Lüneburg Heath (“Lüneburger Heide”). The region is rural but Hamburg can be reached within 30 minutes by train. The fields of work for the volunteers are diverse and offer plenty of opportunities to bring in their own ideas and creativity. The customer service for our recreation and conference guests will be an important part of the activities. This may include childcare, informative tours through the area of Heideruh and information evenings on Heideruh’s history. But the volunteer’s can also design their own offers for our guests, eg excursions about local history can be worked out and organized.Volunteers support the staff and volunteers of Heideruh in planning, implementation and evaluation of events and seminars (eg to our summer festival, the Refugee Festival). Also own events designed by the volunteers are very welcome here.Volunteers will highlight the international profile of Heideruh. For this purpose they will do some researches to Heideruh’s international history and develop a strategy to implement the international aspects of Heideruhs in our public relations (eg social media, articles in publication, published by Heideruh). Heideruh hopes to enrich their own work with an international perspective through the volunteers. The volunteers are part of the team and they are in the whole period supported by a dedicated tutor and work coordinator. There will be plenty of room for reflection on their own learning experience. The volunteers also cooperate with other volunteers and staff in Heideruh. The working languages are English and German. The integration into the local community will be supported by mentors. The voluntary service is intended to support the culture of commemoration in Heideruh and to give volunteers the opportunity for personal development by autonomy, creativity and appropriate project management supported by Heideruh’s experienced staff and volunteers. Heideruh expects of the volunteers the ability for self-reflection and teamwork. The volunteer will make many learning experiences that will later help them in the labor market and in their personal life: The intensive work in a multi-professional team, communication skills, creativity, organizational skills, language skills, understanding of the possibilities of charitable engagement, working in a volunteer association, the living and working with people from different contexts and backgrounds, and much more.In the long run we expect the volunteer to get active in social organizations after the end of the service in Heideruh and to contribute the experience in the society of origin. We expect a further development of cooperation with the participating partners. We look forward to dedicated and curious volunteers who would like to learn a lot and enrich a valuable social project with their creativity.
