Recognising the challenges faced by SMEs in meeting EU legislative requirements to classify and appropriately manage and dispose of hazardous waste, the project will develop a tool to simplify the identification process for hazardous waste. As no easily accessible guidance on identifying and managing hazardous waste currently exists in Europe, the project will fill a discernible gap in the market. Project partners will produce a web-based, multilingual, environmental training programme for SMEs and regulators on hazardous waste management for eight European countries. The project builds upon the experience of 2 of the project partners in devising guidance tools for the identification of hazardous waste components and utilises their development of appropriate software. In particular, the Danish partner's development of a CD-Rom tool will be tested across the 8 partner countries. Together, the partners will develop new modules for the training programme that cover subjects such as overview of EU and regional legislation in relation to hazardous materials and waste and how to classify waste. Modules will fully consider EU legislative requirements and existing best practice examples. The complete project programme will be piloted by the project partners with SMEs and local authorities and adapted where necessary. Recognising the time and personnel constraints on SMEs, the web-based training programmes will be learner-centred, with teacher and tutor delivery kept to a minimum. Project partners will be responsible for contacting potential users of the training programme and for disseminating project results. Where users have expressed an interest, courses will also be delivered by project partners via traditional face-to-face training. During the course of the project, accreditation will be sought for the training programme by project partners.
