The trainees of the Akademie für Erzieher und Erzieherinnen (vocational college for nursery school teachers) have to do a 12-week work placement during their traineeship. In cooperation with our French partner ESPE (école supérieur du professorat et de l’éducation) of the Université Henri Poincaré (Metz-Nancy) we are able to give our students the possibility to do 4 weeks of that work placement in France. At the same time we offer work placements for the students of the ESPE. We have about 8 students wanting to participate in this exchange per year, on the German side, as well as on the French side. As far as the trainers are concerned there is also a regular exchange when visiting the different nursery schools and when having meetings to discuss the different modalities and possibilities of improvement of the exchange. Our German- French partnership thus continually improves the quality of the program, and it is based on a mutual support.
The French nursery schools (écoles maternelles) have already started working with the so-called “Bildungsaufträge” and it is very helpful to observe this method in order to put into practice the current educational programs in connection with early childhood education. A further aim is to give our nursery school teachers the opportunity to get a qualification concerning bilingual teaching and to support their personal development in their role as nursery school teachers. When spending time abroad, nursery school teachers experience the fact of being foreign and develop an understanding for and the problems connected with intercultural education, which you can find in almost all pedagogic institutions in Germany. The nursery school teachers develop personal, social and intercultural skills. The fact of living just next to the French and Luxemburg border improves the job perspectives for the nursery school teachers who were able to make some work experience abroad. Nursery school teachers have already started to teach French in nursery schools in the Saarland, which is conform to the educational standards, creating the structures and bases for a bilingual society in our region. The federal state government continually seeks to foster concepts of bilingualism. Having succeeded their final exams, the nursery school teachers are qualified to work in French nursery schools, too. All in all, the possibility to get to know different cultures and different concepts in such an important educational field gives our nursery school teachers a unique international experience.
