Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Sep 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

As young people in residential care, having lived in an institution for a number of years, there is the tendency for these young people to be marginalised making their inclusion in society more difficult. These young people fail to understand what role they can play in society and they feel that they have nothing to contribute towards society as they feel disempowered. At times, this also makes them uncomfortable when in contact with other people who have not necessarily experienced their similar situation. For this reason we have decided to team up with a partner not working with young people in institutional care and together with the young people we work with we have come up with a youth exchange focusing on outdoor activities. Outdoor sport and activities are a dynamic sphere of social and economic life in developed countries. It is because many of the activities fulfill the needs of today’s people. For example, the need to be in nature, gain new experience, experience adventure and develop fitness and spend free time effectively. Outdoor activities contribute to experiential learning in practice; in real life context. It includes responsibilities, physical, mental and social dimensions of challenges and possibilities for a group and individual to discover their capacities and also the possibility for improvement. This youth exchange will thus be focusing on the following objectives:- to engage in outdoor activities and through these reveal each young people’s potential- to help participants feel less marginalised and part of the community - not institutionalized - to expose participants to different activities that may help them in their professional and personal lives- promote more active lifestylesGet(a)way youth exchange will take place in Greece between the 17 - 24 July 2016 and will bring together 36 young people and 6 youth leaders from Greece and Malta. All activities involve hands-on practice and experiential learning so as to lead to the young persons' personal development and at the same they will realise the unique potential they have. Through the activities, the young person will not only understand and appreciate their potential but they will also realise that they are part of society and can engage in activities that they enjoy doing and at the same time which equip them with new skills and knowledge. This will lead to feel more integrated within society and participate actively in their community. This will not only impact the young people on the short-term but will also provide them with long-term benefits. Knowing their potential and their role in society will allow them to be active citizens that can reach their full potential and contribute to the community in which they are living.
