GATEWAY - Guidance for Assistive Technologies in Education and the Workplace Advancing Young People with Disabilities

The project will facilitate and encourage the use of 'assistive technologies' for persons with disabilities entering Higher Education and the Labour Market. A project website will be developed as the main tool for promoting information about assisted technologies to students, employees, educators & trainers and will deliver activities in an appropriate user-friendly manner to the target group. The project will initially conduct Case Studies to identify the needs of young disabled persons entering Higher Education in the 4 partner countries. Case Studies will highlight gaps between what is offered by assisted technologies and what users need. As a result, 'best practice' models for the assessment of disabled users will be both identified and developed. The on-line 'GATEWAY Assessment Tool' will offer choices relating to possible learning barriers facing the disabled student, with choices being narrowed down to suggest options for assisted technologies appropriate to a student's particular needs. The practical usefulness of suggested assistive technologies will be evaluated during a technological trial period. In summary, the project website will result in: information/advice to young disabled persons with regard to assistive technologies related to education/employment; information to educators/guidance practitioners on different disabilities, models for best practice assessment, and online assessment and information to employers about assistive technologies for disabled employees. The project will inform educators and guidance practitioners on the barriers facing young disabled persons entering Higher Education and the Labour Market and will suggest means of overcoming these through the use of assisted technologies. Alongside the project website, a range of printed materials will also be used to disseminate the project results.
