Gaining Intercultural Work Experience
Start date: Sep 15, 2014, End date: Apr 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project GIWEX was open to interested 9th and 10th grade students who attend the municipal Riemerschmid commercial school in Munich (RWS). Our students are in the phase of preparation for a commercial vocational training and a graduation can be accredited with up to one year on the training period. As today’s training companies are more and more demanding social and intercultural skills as well as expecting a high geographical flexibility, we want to offer our students the possibility to develop into this direction through this Erasmus+ project. The participants were strengthened in the development of their personality and their European identity by staying in host families, immersing into a foreign culture and gaining work experience abroad. This shall take effect not only when staying in other European countries but also it shall also support the open conduct with European trainees here in Munich. At the same time the willingness of the participants to live and work abroad in Europe shall be increased. In four flows a total of 15 students completed a work placement of four weeks in Finland or in Spain, which was documented by the Europass mobility to increase the students’ chances of finding a vocational training position. Apart from deepening their professional practical competences through the initial training at the new workplace and the introduction to new work practices and organisational structures, the participants realized the importance of foreign languages as a prerequisite for communicating at their workplace and in their social environment. Furthermore this period abroad served the purpose of improving social skills like ability to work in a team, sense of responsibility and dealing with conflicts in a culturally different environment. In addition personal skills like politeness, punctuality, independence, resilience, perseverance, dealing with homesickness and the ability to adapt at the workplace and in the family were likewise strengthened. The RWS and the partner schools were responsible for respectively organising the selection and preparation of their own students and for finding suitable work placements and host families at their own location for the students of the partner schools. The work placements facilitated above all the practical competences but naturally also social and intercultural skills. The host families integrated the students into family life, they gave the students an understanding of their culture and facilitate especially social and intercultural skills. While completing the work experience abroad all participants kept in touch by email, sms or whatsapp. Furthermore the project coordinators visited the partner organisations and the students at their workplaces. This stay also offered the possibility for a cultural programme together with the participants. At these meetings the students gave personal feedback. They informed the project coordinators about their further activities on a regular basis via email, kept a report book and updated a blog on our homepage with current reports and pictures. Students of the partner organisations or Erasmus participants of other countries accompanied some of our participants at the work placements and helped with the initial training and supported them. After the return of the participants all phases of the project were evaluated. The results enter the planning and realization of future flows and projects. Together with our students the results will be disseminated on local and regional level and via internet.
