The challenge of globalisation caused a worldwide structural transformation. Global processes had lead to the shifting from an industrial to service oriented society. Hence, deindustrialisation had a great impact on districts with industrial sites and thus were catalyst for the need of the revitalisation of those sites. SECOND CHANCE undertakes the task to foster the regeneration of five brownfield sites in Nuremberg, Venice, Krakow, Ljubljana and Leipzig through the integration & promotion of cultural activities. The development of the post-industrial sites through economic activities is very difficult as those buildings are mostly oversized and the specific constitution of those objects and the distance to the city centre complicate economic developments even more. Therefore, the only chance for further use is the revitalisation through cultural activities. Flexibility of the utilisation of the available resources and a permanent request of premises for cultural presentation meet the demands of artists. Furthermore, culture became an important economic sector and hence, is a very attractive form of utilisation.Aim of SECOND CHANCE is the maintenance of the five historic monuments of the target cities with cultural revitalisation measures to improve their sustainability. Moreover, the transfer of innovative revitalisation strategies and concepts into relevant policies will upgrade the brownfield sites to a key cultural linchpin of the cities district. Achievements: SECOND CHANCE undertakes the task to foster the regeneration of five brownfield sites in five Central European major cities through the integration and promotion of cultural activities. It provides with the concept of Public Private Partnership (PPP) an innovative approach to deal with the problem of urban brownfields and to transform them in cultural hotspots. A Europe-wide analysis of good examples ("best practices") enabled the project partners to identify new utilisation forms of former industrial sites. The next step was to elaborate long-term utilisation and financial concepts for the five sites belonging to the project, including the development of possible Public Private Partnerships. For this purpose a SWOT analysis for each site was conducted to identify potentials that are communicated and defined jointly with local stakeholders in several workshops. On the basis of the development visions and the utilization concepts the pilot projects are now mostly realized: In Nuremberg (DE) the »Kulturwerkstatt« at the former AEG factory, in Leipzig (DE) 11 studios in »Hall 14« of the former cotton mill, in Venice (IT) the »Porta Nuova« Tower of the Arsenale site, in Krakow (PL) the St. Lawrence District and in Ljubljana (SI) an info centre in container architecture »RogLab«, at the former ROG bicycle factory. They aim to test the feasibility and long-term sustainability of the utilization concepts. Main results are provide in the brochure »Revitalisation through Arts and Culture: New Developments for 5 European Industrial Complexes«. Beside the portrait of every project area, the experts Dr. Kunzmann and Dr. Uršič describe general impulses of creative cities. Furthermore Dr.Fischer gives closer view on conception and actions of Public-Private-Partnerships. Furthermore a transnational marketing study was established from which the first tools and recommended actions were realized: the moving exhibition, giving information of all pilot projects, was produced and exhibited during OFFEN Auf AEG, September 2012, in Nuremberg, shown in Venice, October 2012, and presented during public conference in Krakow, December 2012. After the first cultural exchange in September 2012 additional ones were realized between Nuremberg and Ljubljana concerning the opening of RogLab in October and November 2012. Further Polish, Slovenian, Italian and German artists participated in OFFEN Auf AEG Nuremberg in September 2012 and stakeholders took part at exhibitions in October 2012 in Venice.
