From delta to delta / Van delta naar delta
Start date: Aug 1, 2016, End date: Dec 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

‘From delta to delta’ is a youth exchange of JNM, SABUKO and YBA that revolves around the protection of the Chorokhi-delta at Batumi, republic of Georgia. By organising a camp in this area with 30 Belgian, Georgian and Armenian younsters with a different background but a shared passion for nature and the environment, we try to put this seemingly forgotten area back on the map. The Chorokhi-delta is of international importance as a stopover site for migrating birds, and at a regional scale for water management, sustainable fishery and other ecosystem services. The area is threathened by development plans that want to change this natural area into a boulevard, a resort or a golf course. Using this case we would like to think together about possible solutions, in a way that progress and nature can go hand in hand. The exchange will offer the participants unique (learning) experiences. The program of activities that the participants draft together is very diverse, with a balance between informal learning and enjoyment; between meeting other cultures and their own adventures; between intense cooperation and selfreflection. The common thread running through all activities is the social exchange with debate, discussion and empathy, while collaborating on a common ground (the protection of valuable nature), where the youngsters gain new experiences and skills in a participatory way. The partner organisations combine their mutual expertise in approachable, creative and participatory environment protection.During the youth exchange program we work through different projects towards an exposition about the delta. The projects focus on the accessibility of the area, the nature values and the future development plans. Every project has the goal to achieve a tangible result, by interviewing stakeholders (decisionmakers, conservationists, hunters, visitors, etc). Cross-pollination, feedback and inspiration will be shared among the different project groups at a daily breefing with all participants and a mutual evening program. The results will be exposed at the end of the camp, whereat all involved parties will be invited. After the camp, this exposition will also be presented during the Batumi Birding Festival and during the follow-up of the exchange in Belgium, Georgia and Armenia. As such, we leave a footprint in the hope that the local participation and the general attention for our exchange program will lead to a more ensured protection status for the natural hotspot of the Chorkhi delta. In any case all experiences during the exchange program will definitely result in valuable new insights and improve competences for all young participants.
