Fostering a nice childhood
Start date: Jun 1, 2009,

The project “Fostering a nice childhood” is a EVS initiative coordinated by INCO Association, where internationalvolunteers have the opportunity to participate in the activities of the “Villaggio SOS Vicenza” (group Activity) and“VKE” (individual activity), in the cities of Vicenza and Bolzano, Italy. Both hosting organization deal with children. Villaggio SOS Vicenza takes care of children whose families arefacing difficult situations and don’t have the chance to watch them out and support them in their daily needs. Inthe several specific activities of the “Villaggio SOS”, children and young people can experience a familyatmosphere of peace and receive support to their physical and psychological growth. VKE is an associationwhich has the aim to defend the right to play for children with the creation and the organization of specific areasand activities (just like the Playbus amobile playing service, which goes in special areas where families andchildren can use its services, and the fixed game centre – Spielhaus – which offers services of socioculturalentertainment based on games all the year). Besides that VKE plays the lawyer’s role of the right to play forchildren and young people. The “Villaggio SOS” hosts 4 EVS volunteers pro year, besides some others from the German Civil Service. VKEreceived only 1 EVS volunteer but also some other of the German civil service (beside some Italian volunteers). The 5 volunteers presented in this application are from Estonia, Poland, Turkey and Belgium. They will enjoyfrom this experience during a long term period (12 months). The volunteers will support the coordinator and theeducators of the Hosting organizations in their work with the children and youngsters in different projects insidethe respective structures. In Villaggio SOS Vicenza the volunteers will collaborate with the everydaylifeactivities (e.g. supporting lunchtime, picking children up from the school, accompanying them until the houses, etc) and organize and developeducational and specially freetimeactivities (games, sports, music workshops, painting, visit in a museum, etc).In VKE, the volunteers will be asked to participate in the organization of the activities of the “Spielbus” in publicand private places (playgrounds, school courtyard, streets, places etc.) and in the playing centres (“Centrogioco/Spielhaus”). Besides that, she will participate in the management, organization and realization of thesummer centres “Estate ragazzi”.The presence of the volunteers is very enriching to the children (which have the opportunity to face a youngperson from a different reality and culture, helping them to open their minds and deal with life in a positive way)and to the staff of the Hosting organizations (which will not only have several positive inputs concerning ideasand activities, but also a positive example of a peaceful leaving together, furthering the reduction of prejudices).Besides a personal growth predictable in such an experience abroad, we expect that, through living and workingtogether with people of different cultural backgrounds, our volunteers will have the chance to improve theirintercultural and interpersonal communication abilities, as well as their sensitiveness, autonomously andcreativity (developing their own projects).
