Project Background:
Especially the high grade of heterogeneity within our school's classes, but also the variety between the different classes, which includes courses on waystage level to courses on proficiency level, are a challenge for the teachers, who have to adapt various times a day to the different levels.
Another challenge for the teachers is the technical terminology necesssary in the different areas of vocational training (food service/cosmetology/agriculture etc.). This project shall offer ways to increase the interest of the puplis in learning the language. The newly gained knowledge shall be made use of to step more and more up to this challenge and to offer new methodologies to the pupils, so that they can expand their language expertise and competencies.
Project aims:
acquisition of new knowledge and competencies in the field of teaching English as a foreign language
expansion of the cooperation between the language teachers (e.g. corporate creation of lesson plans) and development and revision of the curriculum in terms of teaching methodology
extracurricular remediation for students, with an interest in furthering their language competencies
Participant profile:
The two participants Miss Albers and Miss Lehmann teach in a variety of fields in our vocational school. Miss Lehmann teaches English and French focussing in the general education, Miss Albers teaches English and social science/education especially in classes with a vocational focal point. Both colleagues are working in the field of curriculum development, supporting measures for students with special ineterest/needs (including exchange programmes)
Description of projectactivities/results:
The project includes as a first step a teacher training in Galway, Ireland about "teaching English in the secondary classroom". The participants learn about new and innovative teaching methods and about using technologies in the classroom. (see also part "O")
On top of that the participants gain knowledge about the mediation of cultural knowledge.
As a next step the gained knowledge and experience shall be conveyed in various presentations and trainings to all interested colleagues. The further use of the materials shall be considered and tested. In addition new materials shall be developed.
The project shall meet the challenges the work at a vocational school presents.
The training of the interested colleagues enables the school-wide conveyance of the contents of the Galway teacher training.
Some of the gained competencies (e.g. methods) can also be used in the teaching of other subjects.
This shall increase the sustainability.
This co-operation shall be examined regularly and find it's results in curricular and extracurricular activities (English study groups/tutorials for students/ exchange programmes)
