At the HEMS, the learning of foreign languages has a lower priority than other subjects. The reasons for this are the student’s migrant background and the focus on vocational subjects.
Communicative competence in foreign languages, especially the world language English, and a positive approach to our European neighborhoods are fundamental goals, which are based on our teaching curriculum and are particularly pursued by our teachers of foreign languages.
The HEMS’ students should get a new perspective on learning a foreign language by being introduced to creative student-oriented and innovative teaching methods. Communicating in English should be a positive experience and involve having fun. Furthermore, the students should understand that learning a foreign language can be a meaningful task (e.g. using authentic language material, role plays or future projects with new cooperating partners and study trips).
Two teachers from secondary school and vocational school were chosen to visit teacher training courses in the UK and Malta to get to know new teaching methods in English and employ them at the HEMS. They will disseminate and evaluate their new approach with the other teaching staff so that successful methods will be implemented in our teaching program for foreign language learning. Our main objectives are to enhance fun, quality and quantity in the process of language learning.
Additionally, we hope to start cooperating with European colleagues from the teacher training courses and increase this cooperation on a long-term basis.
