Lieksanjoki River is a river that fl ows into Lake Pielinen. A majority of the water sources of the river are from the Russian side of the border. Th is project was a sub-project according to the framework programme Lake Salmon of Pielinen to the River Lieksanjoki. Th e project aimed at creating a lake salmon image and at safeguarding the diversity and natural life cycle of the species concerned. Th e project was to create a new form of crossborder cooperation – through fi shing and tourism. During the project, a general plan regarding building the fi sh route to the river Lieksanjoki was to be created, necessary licences applied for, the fi rst stage of the route implemented, and the project entity marketed. As a result of the project, the diversity of the genotype of lake salmon was to be secured by building the fi sh route into the old river bed. Th e project was also to create facilities for individual nature tourism entrepreneurship in the region of Pielinen-Karelia. Moreover, the project would result in clear and concrete plans regarding further measures of the fi sh route building as well as their legal prerequisites. Achievements: The project created the general plan for the fish routes and the construction plan for the old river bed in Lieksanjoki River as planned. During the planning, a monitoring programme for the allurement river test was ordered. A vegetation research report was also ordered for the Lieksanjoki River project area. Permits for the allurement river test and the weir were obtained from owners of the water areas and shorelines. The environmental permit to construct the fish routes was obtained from the Eastern Finland Environmental Permit Authority in accordance with the Water Act. The project had the weir built and implemented the allurement river test. In addition, it was responsible for designing and ordering the trap solution used in the allurement river test. The trap solution was tested in the lower section of the Lieksanjoki River old river base by the enticement flow weir for one month. The fish route was implemented as planned in the Lieksanjoki River old river base scenic dams. The biological sections experimental reconditioning work related to the microhabitat assessments in the Lieksanjoki Rivers Kpykoski Rapids was completed using allocated reconditioning funding from the Fishery Unit of the Employment and Economic Development Centre for North Karelia. The project participated in fish planting associated with research conducted by the Biology section and the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute (RKTL) at Lieksanjoki River and Hanhijoki River during the springs of 2003, 2004, and 2005. The participation consisted of organising joint taskforce events for the members of LC Lieksa. During the autumn of 2005, catch of spawning in Lieksanjoki River was implemented in cooperation with the Ruunaa fi shing district and RKTL. So-called Lake Salmon Info Points were established via the project at Lieksan Matkailu [Lieksa Tourist Services], Kolis Ukko Heritage Centre, and Ruunaa Visitor Centre. The Ruunaa point featured a lake salmon aquarium and a small-scale photo exhibition of the project activities. Both were maintained by the project. The Info Point at Ukko Heritage Centre was in conjunction with the Get to Know the Lake Salmon project exhibition. In addition, the History of the Lake Salmon exhibition by Kalastusmuseoyhdistys ry was also on display at the location.
