Following up on the Council Conclusions of May 2007 on a coherent framework of indicators and benchmarks for monitoring progress towards the Lisbon objectives in Education and Training , the objective of this action is to support the participation of Erasmus+ eligible countries in measuring the social dimension of European higher education. The European Commission has long regarded the Eurostudent information as a powerful tool for assessing the socio-economic background and living conditions of European higher education students, investigating also international mobility living conditions. This information helps designing policies for improving higher education systems in Europe, better responding to the student conditions, as well as ensuring sufficient high level supply of skills and competencies. All this aims to bring about higher competitiveness of European business, sustained economic growth and job creation. The results of Eurostudent are also used for supporting Member States' efforts in improving and reforming the social dimension of higher education life and thereby support inclusive societies. The new phase of this international survey (Eurostudent VI) should allow to provide reliable and insightful information, permitting the European Commission to identify coherent indicators for monitoring progress in the objectives of the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training ("ET 2020") . The European Commission is therefore committed, via the Agency, to continuing supporting Eurostudent in its sixth phase (2016-2018).
