PROJECT
FINISHED
Towards the UN Year of Sustainable Tourism 2017: an EVS focusing on sustainability in hostels in Norway. The project has its background in Hostelling International Norway's sustainability strategy, which states that the organization should strive to focus on educating the guests about sustainability issues. This is where our 3 EVS'ers come into the picture. We will give the youth a chance to learn about sustainability challenges, plan and implement actions and be the link between the guests, staff and the local community in and around Oslo Haraldsheim Hostel and selected other hostels. The participants are chosen based on their motivation, experience with sustainability and social activities and wish to experience Norwegian culture and language. The participants are also chosen by considering gender and geographical background. Through non-formal learning, we aim to give the participants and other young people tools to see how they themselves can be a change agent in local communities. We believe that doing activities in the hostel will give the youth a great chance to test out various actions themselves, and to bring results back with them. This can be workshops, social activities, urban gardening - we will give our EVSers a lot of freedom to choose what activities are meaningful to them and for the young guests and neighbours. The EVS volunteers will also work with social media and travel blogging - all with sustainability tourism in mind. After the project ends, we expect that there has been a lot of new knowledge gained about how to work with sustainability issues in the hospitality sector - teaching foreign guests how to recycle, giving the local community a chance to get to know people from all over the world, and showing youth what are challenges that we all have to face regarding sustainability. This, we hope, will create motivated and informed young people who will in turn go back to their own local communities to make an impact there.
