European Mobility Folktales
Start date: Jan 1, 2011,

EUMOF focuses on the development of a collection of folktales, educational material and related pedagogical strategies that strengthen intercultural education and inclusion practices, promoting the mobility of people, stories, languages, ideas and good educational practices. EUMOF will compile versions of folktales that pertain to travelling to "foreign" lands and encountering "different" peoples and cultures. Travelling is a fundamental human activity that has been taking place for thousands of years and for a multitude of reasons. It has always inevitably led to encounters with "other" people and cultures. Folk stories about different aspects of travelling will be grouped together, placed in different categories, and brought into dialogue with each other. Each partner will collect three such stories from their country, secure copyright permissions for publication, have them translated in English and develop related educational material. Partners will also have the rest of the stories translated into their own language. This material will be published on-line, while some of it will be published in print form as well. An audio-CD with narrations of the stories will also be produced. All partners will contribute to the testing, implementation and dissemination of the products. The project will provide teachers (ages 9-12) with educational strategies and material that will enable them to promote amongst their students an awareness of the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity within Europe and of the need to combat racism, prejudice and xenophobia. EUMOF will also focus on the improvement of early second language learning, as well as the teaching and learning of basic reading and writing skills. Through EUMOF, stories about travelling will travel, connecting teachers and students around Europe and reinforcing a sense of a democratic European citizenship that encourages tolerance and respect for European peoples, languages and cultures.
