Objective The objective of the European Master in Law and Economics is to provide students with advanced knowledge in the Economic Analysis of Law, an integrated discipline studying the economic effects of legal rules as well as the legal underpinnings of economic efficiency.Course duration One year (60 ECTS)Brief DescriptionThe Economic Analysis of Law pervades scientific research, policymaking, and counselling worldwide. A comparative approach is used to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of alternative legal rules from an economic perspective. The Economic Analysis of Law, or law & economics, builds upon the insight that economics is a behavioural science, which is able to explain and predict how people act under various legal conditions. It can be shown which legal instruments are the most efficient in curing different types of market failure. Moreover, if efficiency is not regarded as the sole or main goal of the law, economic analysis may still inform the policymaker about the economic effects of rules aiming at other goals. Finally, by studying the economic rationales of law-making, the Economic Analysis of Law provides positive understanding and normative benchmarks for the actions of policymakers, administrative agencies and courts. The Economic Analysis of Law has become increasingly relevant in the modern policy debate. The European Master in Law and Economics programme covers all major fields of the Economic Analysis of Law, from the traditional focus on competition policy and economic regulation to the more recent analyses of torts, contracts, and law & finance. In recent years, insights from behavioural economics have been included in the relevant courses. In view of the increasing importance of empirical methods, their scientific popularity and usefulness for policymaking, from 2015/2016 onwards Empirical Legal Studies are added to the curriculum. In the first and second term, students are distributed among three teaching centres with a maximum class size of 35 students. In the third term, there are more teaching centres and a lower average class size. In the first two terms, there are core courses in the major topics in Economic Analysis of Law. The specialization starts in the second term (one specialized course depending on the second-term university) and it is completed in the third term with two specialized courses and the writing of the Master thesis. Career prospectsGraduate students from the European Master in Law and Economics are trained to work for private companies, public organizations, economic advisers and multinational law firms. Graduates are also well prepared for Ph.D. research in Economic Analysis of Law. An international experienceThe language of instruction of this programme is English. A number of EU-funded scholarships are offered to the best qualified candidates.DiplomaEvery partner university awards a Master degree to students who spent at least one term at that university and have successfully completed the programme.
