The proposed Jean Monnet Chair "European Health, Environmental and Food Safety Law" aims to promote excellence in teaching and research on EU studies at the University of Salerno (Italy) and to improve its teaching offer by introducing open, innovative, and interdisciplinary courses on EU health and environmental law and food safety legislation. The rationale behind this proposal lies in the fact that the University of Salerno doesn’t yet offer to its students the opportunity to specialize in these substantive areas of European law, despite the fact that health, environmental and food safety regulations have cross-sector relevance for about 10 study programs in both the science and the humanities areas (Law, Economics, Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, Agriculture). In such a context, the added academic value of the Chair rests on its capability to fill such a gap with horizontal beneficial effects for the whole host institution. Since the Chair’s main goal is to provide opportunities for both students and workers (especially healthcare and environmental professionals, workers in the food industry, lawyers and civil servants) to develop a wide range of skills and competencies transferable to a variety of professions, teaching activities will be structured according to the specific needs of the target learners and tailored in such a way as to meet also the labour market needs. The teaching methodology will thus combine traditional and innovative teaching methods, including a MOOC offered in the four languages spoken by the Chair holder in order to reach the widest possible audience. Being the first JM Chair to be awarded on such a comprehensive, cross-sectorial and multidisciplinary key area of European legal studies, the Chair will substantially contribute to a greater visibility to this field of study within the host institution and at national, European and international levels.
