European Graduate Placement Scheme
Start date: Oct 1, 2012,

This project aims to increase the mobility of students and meet employer needs for translators by providing work placements for those undertaking translator training in an academic environment. In so doing, this will improve links between employers and higher education. In some countries a work placement is part of a HE translation course, but in others it is not. There is also an inconsistency in terms of the standards. The UK’s Occupational Standards for Translation have been developed in conjunction with translation employers. Research shows this standards model does not exist in other member states. This project addresses these issues by developing a framework for partnerships between HEIs and translation companies and facilitating work placement exchanges for students of translation across the consortium. The outputs envisaged are a Work placement handbook in all partner languages, calibrated to a set of Occupational Standards. The different language versions will be available on a dedicated website. A model of work placements will be piloted in the HEI curriculum, where it has not previously been an option. These placements will be accredited. Training packages will be put in place for both HEI teachers and employers in the use of the NOS. The target groups will be Postgraduate and potentially undergraduate translation students. A minimum of one HEI per member state will be involved together with a minimum of 3 translation companies per partner state. Placements will organised for at least 40 students over the period of the project with training for 15-20 HEI tutors and 12 mentors from the world of work. The project will target reaching a further 20 HEIs and 100 translation companies through its dissemination and exploitation strategies. Further outcomes will include improved employability and mobility of students, established partnerships between HEIs and companies and the extension of the Occupational Standards into other EU member states.
