The project focuses on EU external relations towards the East, including Eastern Partnership countries and Russia, seeking to contribute to a better understanding of political and security dynamics and the challenges they imply for European security and foreign policy. It aims at strengthening the European studies dimension within the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (International Relations), and other Faculties, contributing to the University’s leading role in Portugal in the field of European studies, where teaching and research on these topics is limited. By reaching out to other Portuguese universities through the offering of an e-learning course, it allows wider visibility and contributes to inter-institutional cooperation. The overall goal is to bring new ideas at the academic and policy-making levels, involving different audiences: researchers and academics, students, high-school teachers, policy-makers and civil society. It seeks excellence in teaching using new methodologies: broad engagement of the students in the learning process, face-to face contact and interactive discussions (blended learning and simulation exercises), e-learning tools (problem-based and blended learning approaches), and the use of social media integrated with teaching and events (project’s website). In this way, indicators of achievement qualifying the added-value of the project are related to the new curricula to be developed and the new formats these will include (new courses, summer schools, roundtable discussions, Jean Monnet Lectures, high school teachers training); the innovative teaching-learning methods involved; new materials, such as a textbook and online resources supporting learning/training; and the broad reach in terms of audiences, regarding the academic-scientific community, the practitioners’ world, and civil society’s impact through activities open to diverse audiences directly discussing the pressing and timely topics the project addresses.
