“Ninth of October Public School” is a K-12 school located in Alcacer, Valencia. Approximately 420 students from kindergarten to grade 6 from low socio-cultural and economic background attend our school and we have over 30 faculty members. The centre offers bilingual education in Valencian and Spanish and it has adopted a multilingual program to teach non-linguistic subjects through English.
This Erasmus + KA1 project arises from the need to have more teachers certify to teach subjects in English to implement our multilingual project; therefore the main objective of the project was to train teachers linguistically and methodologically to expand the supply of non-language subjects taught in English at all grades thus improving the quality of language teaching and contributing to the development of linguistic and intercultural competence of all students at the school. Another objective was to establish contacts with teachers from other countries to carry out projects in the future and to contribute in this way to internationalize our institution incorporating the European dimension.
The eleven participants in the twelve mobilities of the project (4 kindergarten teachers; 3 primary teachers and 3 specialists) together with the other teachers of the faculty have demonstrated their commitment to introduce English as a language in their classes and to carry out the School’s European development through its participation in the various activities planned during the two years period.
The activities have involved mobility of participants were: seven English language and culture courses; three courses on Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and two study visits to British schools for principals and assistant principals.
The activities carried out in the school have been:
- It has been taught an hour and a half of English language throughout the kindergarten stage.
- It has been taught music in English in first and second grade and Arts and Crafts in English in fifth and sixth grades.
-Teachers participating in the mobilities have taught two didactic units in English to their classrooms students.
-The school have celebrate main English traditional celebrations (Halloween, Saint Patrick, among others).
- Students have participatd in two music workshops taught in English per year.
-Students have participated in the recording of a video clip on an adaptation of the song "Mouse Princess" by the Valencian singer Dani Miquel sung in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Valencian.
-Students have participating in the acting of "We will rock you" the musical by Queen where students have interpreted the songs in English.
-Participating teachers have recorded a video to share their experiences in this project and to encourage other candidates to participate in KA1 projects.
Preparation, monitoring and evaluating of the project has been carried out by a coordinating committee. For this purpose the participants have constituted a specific training seminar to prepare all the activities of the project.
The dissemination of project activities has been done through the website of the school; the website of the Ministry of Education; the school’s "Erasmus +"bulletin board ; posters and information leaflets to parents and participation in courses and Seminars organized by the Valencian Government.
The assessment tools have included: analysis of documents and certificates; Europass CV; measuring indicators of success; collecting information through teacher’s and student’s questionnaires and comparative tables of academic results of students.
The results and impact achieved are:
-The increase of the supply of non-language subjects taught in English in the school.
- To achieve the development of linguistic, cultural and methodological competence in English of all the participating teachers enabling three of them to obtain certification B1.
- The improvement of the academic performance in English of students who have been taught more hours in English.
-The creation of a European network of teachers and institutions for future projects.
-The participation in an Erasmus + KA201 project involving exchange of students thus we have succeeded in the internationalization of our institution.
