PROJECT
FINISHED
For almost 15 years, the Educational Center for Health care of the TILAK GmbH has taken part in the exchange project "Leonardo-da-Vinci". The available programme is now the first among Erasmus+.
The internship abroad has developed itself into a steady part of the educational offer. Starting in Autumn 2017, the education for health care and nursing will be an official institution (College). And as such, international contacts are not requested but assumed. So because of the National Agency "Lifelong-Learning" we can look back on long-time experiences.
It's not only our aim to allow our students to get a high quality co-op program. Beyond that, our internship exchange is about getting to know more about different structures and conditions, because the nursing standards do not only vary throughout Europe, but also in their occupational profile and competences.
Another important aim is to support the sophistication and social competence of each individual student by sending them abroad.
The number of students depends on each of the cooperation-contracts. We were able to enter bilitural contracts (see Memorandi of Understanding) with almost every partner and the same number of students. Each student is at least 18 years old, in his or her 4th semester out of a total of 6 semesters education and has good to very good theoratical marks as well as practical knowledge. The students take part in a 4-6 week long internship (160-240 hours) at a hospital or a care-home. As a student they work according to their standard of education in departments for health care and nursing. Free-time activities are not defined.
The project process takes place according to the rules and fixed deadline of Erasmus+. The students can apply for an internship abroad anytime at the coordinators office. The coordinator raises an official request to the partner-college and fixes key-data (like time, place, department, board and uniform). The detail organisation (like arrival) must be planned by the students. Since health care and nursing students only receive a small pocket money in Austria, an internship is only possible because of financial support of Erasmus+. As a result, this internship abroad is a fully chargeable, judged internship for the education. In addition, students gain valuable experiences because they have to be incorporated in a foreign country very quickly and they must find their own way in a foreign city, as well. The benefit is particularly in the personal development of each individual, their expertise expands, but also social and communication skills are going to be challenged and encouraged. After their return the students do report about their internship abroad experiences in practical-reflection lessons in class and they give their feedback to the teachers as well. For the institution, there reveals a benefit of internationalism which is a required quality criterion for colleges. Some contact persons from other partner schools are also known to us personally and a lifelong exchange of information is still given. This goes beyond the present project.
