Equipment of Departments of the Border Guards and Border Police Services for the Improvement of the Safety of the Country’s Borders
1. Sub-project: 57 Jeep-like vehicles (4Χ4): (17 to the Region of Western Macedonia and 40 to the Region of Central Macedonia) All-terrain vehicles with 2500 cc and above, with four-wheel drive, which will be used for conducting patrols in the inaccessible mountain areas of the border in order to prevent illegal immigration and smuggling. 2. Sub-project: 13 Thermal imaging cameras: (4 to the Region of Western Macedonia and 9 to the region of central Macedonia) High-resolution imaging of moving persons or objects at night under difficult weather conditions 3. Sub-project: 24 Night vision goggles: (10 to the Region of Western Macedonia and 14 to the Region of Central Macedonia) A portable device that is used at night and functions with light from the stars. It is accompanied by a battery, a lens cover, and a system of lenses for photographing and videotaping.4. Sub-project : image broadcasting systems ( PHOTO PHONES.): (4 to the Region of Western Macedonia and 6 to the Region of Central Macedonia) A system for broadcasting images via computer, telephone, and camera. It broadcasts every point in question that can be saved and can remain in the files.5. Sub-project : 26 Automatic travel document reading devices (Optical Character Recognition): A reader carried on the belt, for mechanical reading of data on any kind of security form.6. Sub-project : 10 Devices for inspecting documents and securities with the emission of ultraviolet or infrared radiation and the use of a filter: (4 to the Region of Western Macedonia and 6 to the Region od=f Central Macedonia) Devices that contain integrated filters that help examine security documents with ultraviolet and infrared radiation. 7. Sub-project : 31 Procurement of portable devices for detecting falsified documents (bag type): (7 to the Region of western Macedonia and 24 to the Region of Central Macedonia) Portable rechargeable devices that contain filters (external, not integrated) and a UV magnifying lens and allow the examination of any security document in any place. 8. Sub-project: 15 Fixed wide-range observation devices: (5 to the Region of Western Macedonia and 10 to the Region of Central Macedonia) Devices with a compact telescoping tripod, with the lightest weight possible, appropriate for placement on irregular terrain as well.9. Sub-project: 28 Devices for reading induction and extraction micro-processes:(8 to the Region of Wesyern Macedonia and 20 to the Region of Central Macedonia) Reading of the micro-processes that will be placed on mechanically legible travel documents. Expected Results: Greece, due to its geographic location, as a frontier country of the EU, takes action in matters of cross-border co-operation for the restriction of illegal immigration – smuggling with the countries adjacent to it. The Greek Police and the Border Guarding Services watch over 979 km of land borders which are identified to the external borders of the European Union and are adjacent to Asia and Africa.Expected Results:1 The relief of our country from the economic costs of removing illegal immigrants and lost customs duties 2. The prevention of the smuggling of drugs and weapons, which has a huge social cost and removes the population from the active development process.3. The most efficient implementation of the cross-border co-operation with the adjacent countries in the areas of preventing smuggling and illegal immigration. 4. The further entrenchment of the sense of safety of the inhabitants of the border areas, and by extension, of the inhabitants of the remaining countries of the European Union.Cross-border Character These results, besides, are being pursued through Title VI of the Treaty of the European Union, which among other things, particularly establishes cross-border cooperation for the effective combating of cross-border crime and contributes to European economic integration.-Close cross-border cooperation in the framework of the European single market constitutes the Third Pillar of the European Union, namely, of the Treaties of Maastricht (1992) and Amsterdam (1997).A protocol of collaboration has been signed between the two countries, however it is at the stage of ratification. Projects Benefits: better, safer and faster transportation of goods and people, resulting to the facilitation of contracting trading relationships and communication between the two countries.
