Empowering Young Volunteers: Taking Action when Disaster Strikes
Start date: Dec 1, 2010,

The Youth Exchange will take place February 19th until departure day February 27th, in Reykjavík and in the South of Iceland. The project is multilateral and brings together 40 participants from four European countries, Belgium, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Iceland - the host country. This is the third part of a longer, supposed 2-year-long project called "Empowering Young Volunteers" and is preceded by Youth Exchanges is the Czech Republic and Belgium. The project aims for developing intercultural skills, promoting European citizenship and activating young people in their local chapterThe main theme of the Youth Exchange is the work of young volunteers and their effects on society. Our objectives are: to recognize the work of volunteers, to learn about the diversity of volunteer work and last but not least understanding and raising awareness of the value and importance of volunteer work in natural disasters. During the project, the participants will be educated by 3 or 4 experts, each of which will receive a 3 hour long time period to inform the participants of the different aspects of the topic. Each of the three sending-countries will also prepare and perform a 3 hour-long workshop, with a specific approach to the topic. We will emphasize and carry out informal education in all aspects of the program, which will also include so-called creative sessions. In the creative sessions the participants are able to form groups and create a project after their own liking, these sessions are aimed to help the participants to reach out beyond the Youth Exchange and carry out the message of the whole project. We will also emphasize good group morality, so the participants can work together with more ease. To do so, we have incorporated team-building sessions, icebreakers and name games into the program. Other items on the itinerary include cultural events such as the international dinner, city rally, pub-crawl and of course the dinner with host families, where the participants will experience a home cooked meal in a "native" home. We will end the program with evaluation sessions, so that we can learn from our experience and do a better exchange in the future.
