Embracing CLIL in Kortepohja
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Kortepohja Elementary School is a comprehensive school for grades one through six. In 2010 – 2011 we have 330 students who study in fourteen classes. We also have a group for students with minor cognitive disabilities and a partly integrated small group for other Special Education Needs students. Every class in Kortepohja Elementary School has at least one CLIL lesson per week, most classes even more than that. CLIL is implemented in many subjects. The amount and the decisions on the contents being taught through a foreign lan-guage are dependent on the skills of the pupils, the available amount of lessons, the teachers' previous experiences in content and language integrated teaching, as well as available CLIL resources. For this project , participants have been selected on the basis of their interest. They also have experiences on teaching on different grade levels. Kati Loponen is interested in the development of the curriculum and clarifying the whole of CLIL idea of Kortepohja School. Curriculum 2016 will also include a CLIL unit . Susanna Kuusinen is responsible for organizing & directing the University JULIET students' (Jyväskylä University Language and English Teaching Innovation Programme ) teaching practice. Saija Vehmas is interested in early education classes CLIL development and her interest is also in the development of her own language skills . Through the project, our school's teachers will receive timely and relevant training on CLIL context. Indirect impact from the project will be shown in students' motivation to learn the language. As a result of the project the future class teachers studying in the University of Jyväskylä (JULIET program) will receive the very latest knowledge of CLIL in the lectures of CLIL metholody organized at the school and in their teacher trainings . In addition, the project will bring new perspectives on CLIL to the CLIL Cascade network within the framework of the meetings . The project will have far-reaching effects on the entire city of CLIL network ( from kindergarten to university ) , curriculum reform, and above all, CLIL development and enrichment within Kortepohja School. The children of Kortepohja school will continue to show the benefits of this project in their learning and language skills through CLIL for many years , and in the distant future .
