The 'Dignity in Care' project aims to improve the quality of healthcare as well as the training of medical and social care providers in the 2 Seas area.The project will reflect on the way in which care is provided by students and care providers, using the experience-based learning methods of a care-ethics laboratory in Flanders (STimul). The research is based on behaviour and not technical and clinical skills, in order to improve dignity and patient-centered care, especially for elderly people and those dependent on carers. The methodology has been developed using a fully-equipped care environment where health and social care professionals and students are brought together to experience being cared for, first hand. This sTimul concept will be furthered using the expertise of the cross-border partners to strengthen knowledge and best practice within institutions and related professions in the 2 Seas area.The expected results of the 'Dignity in Care' project will be an improvement in the training of existing and future health and social care providers, a self-sustaining network of Dignity Champions in every cross-border region and a new sTimul care-ethics lab in Zeeland. Expected Results: What are the key results of the project?Activity 1:- The training material of the sTimul experience is available in Dutch, English and French- sTimul coach who can prepare and guide each of the regional facilitators and student trainers- 256 participants (healthcare students, trainers, professionals and management staff) will have participated in the sTimul experience- Post-session evaluation, organised and guided by the regional facilitator and student trainer, under supervision of the sTimul coach.Activity 2 and 3:- 4 cross border study visits and related data gathered for evaluation- 2 networking events in each region- guidelines to set up a sTimul:care-ethics lab- a conference room in sTimul: care-ethics lab, Moorsele and sTimul Nederland in Zeeland- Dignity Champions and Care Ambassadors visible in the cross-border region- An improved sTimul: care-ethics lab concept integrating the evaluation of the cross-border experiences- joint certificate for participants of the sTimul experienceAre all partners and territories benefitting from the results?The target groups are care providers and care receivers. The project 'Dignity in Care' aims to increase the quality of health and social care, to more dignity and patient centered care, especially for elderly and vulnerable care dependant people. These are the primary target groups. Professionals in health and social care (care providers, incl. staff members), students in vocational and higher education (nursing, medical and nutrition science, physiotherapy, ...) and professional tutors and trainers are the secondary target group of the project. Research shows that dignity and patient centered care not only improve the quality of care and life of care receivers, but also improves the job satisfaction for care providers, supporting the recruitment and retention of (future) care providers. It is also an important issue in the prevention of burnout and over-pressurised workers.Final beneficiaries are all stakeholders involved in health and social care at institutional and governmental level. Stakeholder organisations can integrate the outcomes of the 'Dignity in Care' project in the quality management systems of the organisation. Policy makers are invited to adapt existing procedures and legislation concerning quality management according to the project outcomes.What are the effects / outcomes for the territories involved?The outcome for each territory involved in the project is an improved method of experience-based learning in a care-ethics lab, to enhance the ability of ethical reflection and practice by students and care providers in health and social care organisations in order to increase dignity and patient centered care. With the guidelines each partner will be able to set up a sTimul: care-ethics lab in their own region. Publication of the project outcomes will procure an approach to overcome the international identified lack of ethics in care in health and social care settings. Improving the care-ethics lab accomodation in Moorsele and the new centre in Zeeland will answer to the raising demand concerning training and experience based learning in ethics and patient centered care in health and social care settings. Through cooperation and knowledge transfer, each Member State's care system has the potential to improve and reflect upon the ethics and dignity in care.
