The World Meets in Kindergarten – Giving Early Childhood Education Training a European Profile Students of social pedagogy at the Fachschule für Sozialpädagogik at Marienhausschule are focusing on spending time in other European countries. They are learning about the education systems of various member states, comparing them with their own educational path and are reflecting on their own early childhood education training. In suitable educational facilities, especially nursery schools, they are going to complete the last part of their practical training, navigate their way in unfamiliar environments and plan curriculums to meet the needs of the children in their care. In doing so, they will broaden their self-competence and social skills and develop professional abilities that are enriched by a European dimension. The project aims to reduce hesitation and fear towards different cultures and countries, to develop genuine enthusiasm for projects and processes involved in intercultural exchange and intercultural learning and to apply pedagogical methods in the area of intercultural learning. Those participating in the project should experience how intercultural dialog enriches pedagogical work and develop awareness for the fact that "foreign" is no longer foreign and frightening if a sense of familiarity and understanding can be established through communication. In the project which is scheduled to last two years, 20 students from the Fachschule für Sozialpädagogik will be chosen who are in the last phase of their training and plan to take their practical exam in a European country. To this end, they are going to complete their practical training as part of the ‘mobility’ project at partner schools in the Czech Republic and at other schools in Latvia, Italy, Spain, and in the United Kingdom. They will participate in the day-to-day planning in the pedagogical nursery schools, observe the children, analyze their circumstances and needs and organize targeted curriculums as part of participatory projects. In doing so, they will be accompanied closely by local mentors and teachers at the school who will ensure personal attention. The students will develop their self-competence by experiencing themselves as individuals acting independently in unfamiliar environments. They will learn to empathize with people from different cultures and regions and understand the situation of migration and the notion of being foreign. The schools will benefit from the theoretical educational content from Marienhausschule, which is conveyed via the students during their practical work in the project schools. Marienhausschule aims to become known as a training school which develops its own European profile, starting with early childhood education training at the Fachschule Sozialpädagogik, a profile which is to be expanded over the long term to include all of the school’s various training areas (nursing care, curative education and social therapy and ergotherapy).
