Development of skills of after secondary education students (MIEEK)
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Jul 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This projects is aiming to train 58 participants in Italy in the areas of Gas/welding, Photo-voltaic and bakery/confectionery. Most of the participants are unemployed seeking new employment opportunities (the three employment areas are in need of qualified staff in Cyprus). Cyprus lack in skillful labor in professional areas such as qualified bakers and confectioners, gas and welders, and photo voltaic technicians. MIEEK establishment and purpose of operation is to fulfill Cyprus labor needs in these areas. This project is very important for the participants development as it will provide them with the skills and competencies to meet employment challenges. Unemployment in Cyprus is currently at the highest within Europe. Paphos is basically a tourist district, attracting almost 2/3 of the tourists arriving to Cyprus. Participants will be qualified both academically (receive an acknowledged certification) and practically (by receiving training in acknowledged organizations). The combination of the school attendance and practice in Italy will enable participants to receive the skills and knowledge needed to prosper in their chosen employment path. Gas/welders participants will learn to install, repair and replace distribution meters and pipe (using soft solder, flux, and acetylene torches); operate and maintain light earth-moving equipment (backhoes, side booms, tampers and hydra-cranes); or establish and test customer service gas lines and equipment. They will install meters, inspect and test house lines, collaborate with plumbers and contractors, and investigate customer service issues. They will be in place to combine great customer service with technical know-how to grow a satisfying career. PV technicians will become capable to install, service, troubleshoot and maintain commercial and home scale solar arrays. They will be in the position for testing newly constructed systems as well as responding to service issues. Additionally they will perform maintenance inspections on existing systems and collect accurate data for reporting purposes. Bakers/confectioners will learn to master the use of a large number of tools in order to produce quality items, measuring and mixing ingredients into dough according to a recipe, produce and decorate a variety of products, become creative etc. The commitment of participants and receiving partners to successfully meet project training objectives will enrich skills and know how enabling participants to fulfill their professional aspirations. The combination of knowledge and skills will enable participants to find easier a job and adjust comfortably in any working environment (by developing their social skills). They will also improve their linguistic competencies (specifically in the use of the English language). They will become professionally fulfilled and skillful to meet the challenges of their trade. They will understand cultural diversity, enabling them to work comfortably with people of different ethnic and racial orientation. By the end of their school attendance and by completing this training in Italy, participants should be in place to work efficiently in their area of expertise in Paphos or abroad.
