Developmenmt of Joint Flood Prevention System in the Border Area from the Border to Bezdan

Vast flatland areas stretching along the left bank of the Danube in Hungary and Serbia (from Baja to Bezdan), facing a threat of serious floods, are remarkably interconnected. For these reasons, comprehensive co-operation related to flood prevention activities was established between the two countries in 1955 and has been continuously developed. Areas threatened by floods in both countries are protected against the Danube flood waters with the dykes of the 1st protection line, and in the event of their failure, further flooding is confined with the dykes of the 2nd protection line. After recent flooding in 2002 and 2006, a weak section in the protection line has been spotted, seriously threatening dyke stability and safety in the border area. Activities planned by this project ensure repairs of the existing flood prevention systems and reduction of flood risks in the border area through detailed geo-technical investigations.
