Developing training modules for staff on Aging and Disability issues
Start date: Jan 1, 2012,

REASON FOR THE PROJECTThe life expectancy of people with disabilities is increasing and it is an established fact that aging issues will be a major challenge in the coming years for everyday support and care for people with intellectual disabilities. Professionals working in the health care sector, like medical doctors, psychologists or educators, usually have no specific knowledge concerning people with intellectual disabilities and the specialities of aging in this population. Though aging for people with intellectual disabilities has similar challenges and issues as for the general population, it is well known that there are numerous aging related issues that show to be highly specific for the intellectual disabled population. Frontline staff and service managers are faced with new realities in their profession and there is a need for training to face those new challenges and to be able to respond to them in the most appropriate way.The project aims at developing and carrying out innovative training modules to help front line staff and health-professionals deal with these new challenges. DESCRIPTION OF OUTPUTSThe training modules will be based on needs assessments and on work of experts. They will be directly linked to practical work experience and will take into account the real needs of users, frontline-staff, and professionals working in the health care sector. Didactical methods will make use of new media technology through a web-based training platform which will be specifically developed by the partnership to answer the staff training needs. IMPACTParticipants to the training sessions will gain awareness and new knowledge on the topic, therefore developing new skills and competences in their work. The online training platform will guarantee widespread impact and exchange of knowledge between all countries.
