A key issue for delivering effective arts programmes in Europe's prisons is proper preparation,both for outside artists & for those already working in prisons with limited experience.Despite possible conflict with the security interests of many countries' penal regimes, previousEuropean projects have identified the effective role that the arts play in the rehabilitationprocess, especially with a largely illiterate prison population. Whilst appropriate training is needed foranyone working in prison education, it is particularly important for the arts, considering theopen-ended nature of creative activities & the required distinction between their educational &artistic values.In the UK, attempts have been made to address this problem, including by the Prison ArtsFoundation's & especially by Escape Artists, now partly integrated into SEEDS, which hasdeveloped a number of relevant training modules. However, outside Britain there are fewexamples of such programmes & it was this lacking that CredAbility sought to resolve.The main project objectives were:-Updating & transferring a comprehensive training model for artists & others with limitedexperience of using the arts in prisons, into different contexts & countries- Organising national & international accreditation for the training model-Organising transnational training workshops & information exchanges to test & promote thetraining model-Published & disseminated the training model locally, nationally & internationally, particularlythrough the project website & the organisation of an international conference-Established local, regional & national partnerships to support the project's activities and the partnership continues doing so after the project end.
