HOW TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO FINALIZE THEIR COMPULSORY EDUCATION. INNOVATIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS
FOR REDUCING EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING IN A LIFELONG LEARNING SOCIETY
The IES Sierra de Aras is a school of secondary education of a very heterogeneous student body, with a large percentage of families
in a very low socio-economic status, frenquently unemployed or having low qualification jobs, and facing economical and social
problems in any case. Many of the students who begin studies at our center end up leaving the educational system, which is why
we are benefiting from a program of compensatory education.
Our school aims to achieve the targets set in the Eurpe 2020 Strategy, including the objective of reducing dropout rates to less than
10 % for compulsory education; that is why we need our teaching staff to improve and update their teaching methods and
approaches in order to increase student motivation and complete compulsory education. Furthermore, our staff need to be aware
of new XXI century teaching methods as examples of good practice in this regard.
A second point of action is determined by the inminent arrival of bilingual students from our affiliated primary school, so that
teachers who are already in training have the chance to improve their language skills (CLIL methodology). Besides, the staff will be
required to develop our future plan of internationalization and its European dimension. The completion of a training course in
another european country will be fundamental to gain intercultural and international experience as a first step to implement future
KA2 actions (strategic associations) and to establish contacts with future partners.
Four teachers of different subjects will be involved in the training process abroad; they are expected to apply their new experience
and knowledge not only to their classes, but also to other teachers via work groups. These teachers will be selected according to
objective criteria ( length of service, curriculum, interview and language skill). This will allow us to tackle the project successfully. To
outsource our experience, we want to show and transmit everything to the rest of secondary schools in our town. The idea is to set
conferences and joint projects managed by official teacher training centers.
We firmly believe that our project is necessary to achieve the objective of reducing early school leaving. We are determined to
continue with the process of internationalization of our school in this way in order to know how specific measures are implemented
in other schools and other countries, and finally in order to end up developing international strategic associations.
