Community development in Bilthoven
Start date: Oct 1, 2014, End date: Jul 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The people visiting the activities and projects have a lot of different cultural and social backgrounds. Many activities and projects are based on the work of volunteers. Therefore intercultural learning and volunteers play a central and important role within our organisation. In our daily work and in the European "Youth" programmes we saw the importance of meeting people from different countries / cultures and the exchange of skills, information, etc. Our organisation wishes to offer an opportunity to young people from other countries to participate in the development of the work with people in a multicultural setting. With international youth-activities young people can learn about other cultures and "step" over boundaries. With EVS, the volunteers, the organisations and the participants in activities can benefit from mutual skills and knowledge. This project offered an opportunity to one 29 year old female volunteer from Spain to participate in the development of welfare work with people in a multicultural setting with the aim to prevent social exclusion. Our aim was to stimulate and organize activities focussing on the welfare of the local community by providing educational, recreational, cultural and sportive activities / facilities in addition to tutoring services and prevention activities for various age-groups.tivities. The project offered an opportunity to work with various age-groups in Bilthoven. General objectives were: - Avoid social exclusion and improve learning abilities and creative skills. - Provide recreational facilities in addition to tutoring services and prevention activities. - Offer various groups a large variety of leisure - time - activities All activities took place in and around our building in Bilthoven. The volunteer participated in the playgroups, the child-activities, youth work and partially the work with elderly people. The volunteer assisted with the care, accompaniment and animation of participants in several age groups. She will participated in the preparation (including the publicity), the implementation and evaluation of the activities and projects, such as: playgroup-activities (toddlers); creative afternoons for children; cultural events (dance, theatre / drama); disco-activities for children (once a month), assisting in providing meals for 60 elderly people (once a month), summer camp for 400 kids (one week). Supporting the local volunteers with and participating in organising big annual events (art-exhibition, bazar, childrensholidayweek, secondhandbook event). Additionally the volunteer was asked to give a lesson in our Spaninsh language course. Her input had an added value for the activities. Toddelers were stimulated to find new ways to ccommunicate with someone who did not speak Dutch yet. Eldery people were stimulated to communicate in English and some people gaiined more self-confidence by talking with someone from another country. She was a great support to the elderly people during meals we offered for 70 guest every month. Her balanced pedagogical approach was highly appreciated by our volunteers and proved to be of great value for the kids participating in our activities.
