The project goal is the improvement of teaching skills and methodology of the teachers who teach Math and Natural Sciences in English in the frames of CLIL educational program in Daugavpils State Gymnasium to insure the continuity of this program. CLIL is the most popular educational program since 2006. There are approx. 75 students who study Natural Sciences and Math in English. The trends of the last years show the increasing number of students who choose CLIL program. There is one teacher in gymnasium needed who could teach Natural Sciences in English. The reasons are the lack of staff in 2 years because of retirement and increasing number of students who choose the program. The investigation of the staff potential proved that a more effective solution is to train an English language teacher for teaching Natural Sciences by adapting popular - science texts and rich language material than a teacher of other subjects who has no experience in language teaching methodology and has low foreign language skills. The other CLIL teacher of Math needs to improve special vocabulary of CLIL in Math and her teaching methodology to focus on interactive learning process and practical use of Math. The third teacher is a headmistress who is teaching Latvian to students from foreign countries in the frames of AFS program. She needs to improve her methodology and English language skills to teach and acquire intercultural competence of foreign students. Both teachers and the headmistress will participate in the strategic partnership and work out materials for the international CLIL program in cooperation with colleagues from 5 European countries. The program will be part of educational programs in gymnasium. To reach the goal there are structured training courses for mentioned teachers needed: 1) for CLIL teachers - to acquire and to improve the specific language of Math and Natural Science subjects and the teaching methodology of CLIL in the international study programs for teachers. The participants will gain a theoretical and practical insight into CLIL methodology, they will observe and evaluate practical CLIL lessons to widen the diversity of used methods to make lessons more interactive and to get the skills how to use the subject content in practical life. The English language teacher will proceed her further education in Latvia by taking part in the seminars and courses offered by experienced Latvian colleagues and observe practical lessons. In 2 years she must be ready to teach Natural Sciences in English. 2) for headmistress - the course of General English to reach the level B2 focused on methodology to acquire intercultural competence. There are 3 parts of the project foreseen: 1) the theoretical and practical preparation of the participants for the training course, 2) the training course according to the participants needs, 3) the evaluation and integration of the materials and gained theoretical and practical experience in to the learning and teaching process to improve/to insure the continuity of CLIL program in Daugavpils State Gymnasium. We expect more practical use of Math competence and Natural Sciences content not only in the lessons but in the projects, in the strategic partnership to expand European dimension by acquiring of these subjects. In this way we intend to realize one of the priorities of Gymnasium`s development - to combine learning process and practical life to lessen the gap between theoretical acquirements of knowledge in school and the needed skills on the labour market. Our students will be well prepared for the studies in Latvian and foreign high schools - to use wider diversity of study resources including exchange and academic programs for research and thereby to become highly qualified specialists in strategically important branches of Latvian economy. But - the most significant - the project will improve the teaching and learning quality and insure the continuity of CLIL program in Daugavpils State Gymnasium.
