Carpathian heritage railways (HUSKROUA/1101/176)

The overall project objective is to conserve the historical and natural heritage of the traditional narrow gauge railways as a means to reinforce visiting attraction of the Carpathian cross border regions of Romania and Ukraine. The specific objectives of the project are: 1. To reinforce the current range of attractive tourist products through the creation of new tourist products based on the unique historical heritage railways in Vasser Valley in Maramures county of Romania and Vygoda area in Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine. 2. To raise capacity of local tourism counterparts to manage effectively the historical and natural heritage sites to satisfy visitors and to benefit local communities. 3. To improve the image and promote the historical and natural heritage venues as holiday destinations to potential domestic and international visitors. Expected Results: Estimated results: (1) New attractive products and tourist facilities around the historical sites of steam trains and narrow gauge railways in Vygoda (Ukraine) and Vaser Valley, Maramures Mountain Nature Park (Romania) will be established (Vygoda heritage centre, 2 new biking/hiking routes; information boards) and in such a way the offer of the local tourism services and products will be increased and diversified making the stay in the project target localities more educational and entertaining for their visitors, securing the value creation and preservation of local resources. (2) Local knowledge and community benefits will be created and capacity increased: the local awareness and appreciation of the potential of the heritage will be raised, private-public partnership opportunities identified and understood. The small scale tourism related businesses in target regions/countries will be equipped with new management and marketing instruments, as well as resources and new opportunities adding to the areas attractiveness. Tourist product management and marketing will be improved through the partnership network established by the project. (3) The project will promote the heritage railway sites to the wider tourist audience therefore attracting more potential customers to the area and eventually increasing the image of the heritage venues as holiday destinations.
