The international youth exchange programme "Bunt statt Grau – multicolorado" gives deprived and immigrated teenagers from a youth welfare institution in the Province of Valencia as well as from open youth work in the City of Gelsenkirchen the chance to experience Europe and its "unlimited" possibilities. By getting to know each other, finding out about different cultures, going in for sports together, experiencing nature, sightseeing at world-famous examples of architecture and through group dynamics and workshops and, last but not least, by living together 18 days, the boundaries of one’s own language and social abilities, mobility limits, and the involuntary focus on the home region are consciously pointed out, in order to be playfully transcended in a team.
Broadening one’s horizons in this way creates new opportunities in developing one’s own personality, in getting to know oneself, and in discovering individual abilities. At the same time, the teenagers make new contacts, form friendships, and acquire skills.
During the exchange programme the teenagers are accompanied by the social workers they are already familiar with. This concept guarantees that the youths are close to the people they trust so that they feel safe enough to discover foreign contexts and make new experiences.
Intensive preparation and wrap-up sessions ensure that the 18 days of international youth exchange will have a lasting effect.
