Building EU-US Innovation Networks in Miami: A Series of High Profile Discussions with our Community at Large
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Miami serves as the ideal location for the interactions and interrelationships among professional communities – whether scientific, civic, business or diplomatic – from Europe, Latin America and the U.S. Florida International University, and our EU/Jean Monnet Centre are the ideal venue for hosting a series of workshops on issues critical to our city, our South Florida region, and even to our nation and the world. Miami is the gateway to Latin America. Moreover, the European population is very large, about 125,000. We have over 1000 multinational businesses (many of them European), 6 major European Consulates General; 12 European Honorary Consulates, 5 European Trade Offices, and 10 European bi-national chambers of commerce. A key aspect of this vibrant diversity is the ability and desire to tackle some of the most urgent problems around the globe today that crystallize particularly in Miami and South Florida: climate change, based on our location; urban infrastructure in an age of smart cities, based on our population growth, and innovation in healthcare based on the graying population in Florida. Based on these themes, we will organize six Workshops that will foster dialogue among university faculty, scientists, companies, and innovators of various kinds in the EU and the U.S. A number of outputs, such as policy suggestions and collaborative transatlantic partnerships, are expected to result from these high-visibility, high-impact, glocalized workshops. The Miami and South Florida based faculty, consulates and business communities are highly supportive of this innovative series of events, and the linkage to South Florida’s largest public university enables wide outreach and synergetic collaborations that foster a sustained integration of these diverse constituencies with regards to these important issues.
