This project aims to involve teachers and students of seven secondary schools from all over Europe in a common project about housing. The participants from Austria, German, Greece, Italy,Romania, Spain and Sweden will be made aware of how living conditions influence people in their personal and social lives. Comparing their own way of living with that of their partners’ they will get insights of how people live in other countries and how housing defines their social environment. They will also realize the cultural and environmental diversity among the European countries and they will learn how different customs, climates and natural resources have shaped the way people live and their local architecture. Students will learn the importance of the ecological issues, and how and why these should affect the way people are building their houses in different countries and use natural resources at home and in their communities. We are all secondary schools with different backgrounds, but we face similar educational problems. Many students have a migrant background and little support from home. They only have basic skills, show little interest in learning and have low academic achievements. In their school subjects they miss the reference to real life. This leads to frustration because they fail to see the purpose why they should learn for academic subjects at school. Our project wants the students to apply their theoretical school knowledge to practical work and to find out the importance for their future lives. Students will be more motivated because they will be able to get an insight into the world outside school by collecting information about the different aspects of housing. This process will be supported by professionals and experts in this field. We will learn what professions are involved in planning and building houses and in the infrastructure of communities. Our students will get an insight into jobs they might take up later in their professional lives. They will also realize the importance of entrepreneurship in this field. We will start to explore how people lived in the past in their local environments, collect information, build model houses and present them together with the background information in a moving exhibition. Then we will also work on today’s housing focusing on different aspects like: the construction of houses, , energy saving methods , sustainability of materials, infrastructure, provisions for people with special needs and old people, preservation of old buildings to keep our cultural identities. Students will interview experts in communities, house owners, architects and builders. The results will be uploaded to an online platform and collected in a brochure to be published. ‘An energy saving week’ will be organized at our schools with lessons, workshops, exhibitions and debates .During this week each school will visit a centre of energy production. Finally we will plan the ideal European community “EUROPIA” where we consider all the demands of the participating partners and make use of the information we have collected so far. There will be a competition of different proposals how people can live together in a European community. On our website, in our brochure ,in our project magazine and our exhibitions our results will be made accessible to a wider public. The energy week will be remain as a regular activity in all schools after this project has finished and will lead to a change in awareness and behavior towards energy consumption in public and private houses.
