Breaking up Barriers within Civil Society across Europe
Start date: Mar 1, 2012,

This individual EVS project mainly takes place at the international secretariat of UNITED for Intercultural Action in Amsterdam (NL). It includes one volunteer with fewer opportunities from the Russian Federation, who will do a 12 months service at UNITED. The project aims to integrate and support the participation of a young Russian person in activities of the UNITED secretariat, as well as the specific 2010-2012 joint project activities of UNITED and its Russian partner Youth Human Rights Movement with the goal to strengthen and empower Russian youth, human rights, ethnic and civil society NGOs in counteracting racism, xenophobia and hatred. The volunteer will be involved in the organisation and coordination of different campaigns and youth actions against racism, nationalism and xenophobia and for the support of human rights and intercultural dialogue. Further, the volunteer will assist in the preparation and implementation of at least one international UNITED conference, with more than 70 participants from different European countries and with diverse cultural backgrounds. Active participation of the volunteer in the conference(s) is planned. The well-established information- and networking-tools of the pan-European UNITED network enable the volunteer to work in a professional environment. An educational factor is the involvement in the local working-living community in Amsterdam, where the UNITED secretariat is a part from. Through local examples in the Netherlands the volunteer experience new methods and ways of community building and empowerment of a common social responsibility in society. By working together within an intercultural/international team the volunteer is able to identify common European values and what it means to be an active European citizen.
