The international youth exchange `Break free! Face your life in a creative way` is a cooperation project between Humanistische Jongeren Belgium (Hujo) and Junge Humanist_innen Berlin (JuHu). It took place from 25th October to the 1st November 2014 (eight project days), in “Haus Kreisau” in Berlin-Kladow, with 19 Belgian and 13 German teenager, three Belgian and four German teamer.
We developed the topic in focus to strength the youth in their own individual processes to deal with the various demands, tasks and duties which burden on them in their daily life. Themes like love, friendship, family and hobbies will find their space and were processed with different creative techniques and made successes and challenges of life as a teenager in the EU visible. The group developed their topics and implementation in a guided process by reflection methods, cooperation games and teaching of various creative methods in the dance-, theatre-, art-, music- and film workshops. Their individual expression on these themes were completed and exposed in a final presentation day.
In the beginning we focused on group building and getting to know activities, mainly with non-verbal communication. The camp language was English. Camp-rules were developed in national groups and afterward discussed and resolved together. Furthermore, the young people were integrated into the program planning before and during the camp and were introduced to the topic through media and group discussion. To support the language skills translation cards for daily used words were made and spread around the camp. Daily language games and songs, a wallpaper and the group activities and social service like preparing the food supported the progress.
The workshops were presented by one teamer each and after one day of “trial and error” the participants chose their group in which they worked till the end. Every day there was half day of workshop time and half day of other group activities, like a trip to Berlin with a group challenge of different tasks (City Bound) or later on, preparing the final event. Detailed methods are listed in the program.
During the project, the group strengthened their intercultural, linguistic and social abilities, the awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses as well as a strong sense of responsibility for each other. They discussed problems and found solutions and helped each other with translation and understanding. Self-confidence, appreciation and tolerance among them grown a lot during that week.
